Chocolate Carrot Cake

A twist on the traditional carrot cake this cake is excellent served with cream cheese icing.


2 cups flour

Refrigerator Bran Muffins

This batter keeps in the refrigerator for several days.  Keep a batch on hand for unexpected guests.


2 cups bran flakes cereal

1 cup boiling water

Soak bran in boiling water while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

2/3 cup melted butter

1 cup white sugar

1 cup packed brown sugar

3 eggs

3 cups milk

Mix butter, sugars, eggs and milk together in a large bowl. Blend in cereal mixture.

Helpful Hints


  • Clean narrow necked bottles with vinegar and water.  Add rice.  Cap and shake to scour the bottle.
  • To remove water scale form drinking glasses fill with vinegar and let sit until clear.
  • In cool weather, when washing windows, wet your cloth with car windshield washer solution.  Wipe and dry.
  • Clean woodwork with cold tea.
  • Mix 1 tbsp salt with a cup of vinegar.  Add to flour vases to clean the grimy residue.
  • Polish scratches on glassware with toothpaste.
  • Rub peanut butter on price-tag glue to remove it.
  • Prevent vases from scratching furniture by putting self-stick pads on the bottoms.
  • Clean up broken eggs by sprinkling with salt and letting stand a short time.  Wipe clean with a paper towel.

Pumpkin Spice Cake

This recipe uses canned pumpkin and a mixture of fragrant spices.  It’s good served with cream cheese icing and is a festive addition to your fall table.
