Anthurium grow best in a bright diffuse light in a warm spot. Low light levels slow down or stop the production of flowers.
Keep the plant in a temperature between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow it to get above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or below 50 degrees.
The plant will rot if left in standing water. Water and allow to drain. Place near a pan with gravel and water to adjust the humidity. Mist the plant daily with a spray bottle. Only water the soil when it is dry to the touch.
Fertilize every three to four months with a fertilizer with a higher middle number.
Plant in a light soil such as potting soil mixed with orchid mixture.
Keep the plant out of drafts to keep it blooming.
After the holidays, and the cactus has bloomed, give the plant a month to rest. Place in a
cool room providing little water. Once the cactus has rested it is the best time to repot. However, the plant needs to be pot-bound to flower so don’t give it too much space. Fertilize every 2 weeks with a houseplant fertilizer.,
Move the plant outside to a shady area until the temperature gets below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature gets cold bring the plant back inside. Water and feed every 3 weeks with houseplant fertilizer. Prune in June to encourage more flowers at Christmas.
Move the plant inside before it freezes. In September feed the plant once and than stop watering in October. This helps produce blooms in December. Resume watering in November. Keep the plant in a dark room at night. When flower buds begin to form increase light and humidity by placing the plant on a saucer with gravel and water close by. Do not allow the roots of the plant to sit in water or they will rot.
Place the plant where it will get 6 hours of indirect sunlight. Keep the soil moist and humidity around the plant. Feed the cactus with a houseplant fertilizer once a month.
Originally from Mexico, the Poinsettia plant comes in a variety of colors including red, white and pink. It flowers through December to February.
Poinsettia’s like diffuse light. They cannot tolerate bright light but at the same time need to be away from drafts. If the temperature gets below 65 degrees Fahrenheit the plant may not survive.
Water your plants twice a week until the soil is moist but not drenched. Do not allow the roots to sit in water or it will die.
To keep a Poinsettia after Christmas move the plant to a cool, dark area and decrease the watering schedule. Fertilize after blooming with a house plant fertilizer once a month.
In May, put the plant in a diffuse light location. Cut back the branches to 5-6 inches in length. When the branches grow to 10 inches pinch the tips to encourage growth. Do this until the end of August.
In September, move your plant to a room with at least 12 hours of darkness at night. This will encourage the plant to turn color for the holidays.
Planting lavender in your strawberry bed will improve the crop.
Cut flowers from the garden in late evening or early morning to ensure freshness.
It’s January and the snow is starting to come. Usually by December we’ve had a couple of months of snow but this year we have had an unusually green season. So I usually have cabin fever in January and I start dreaming about plants and gardening.
