Grandma’s Old Time Quirky Helpful Hints

I find recipe books to be wonderful places to explore our ancestry.  My grandmother left a cookbook that contains many unusual recipes from days gone by.    Here are a couple of  quirky recipes left to us in her cookbook.

Meat Cure for 100 Pounds of meat

1 quart salt

10 tbsp sugar

4 tbsp black pepper

3 tbsp salt

1/2 cup water (warmed)

Dissolve salt in warm water.  Mix with the rest of the ingredients and rub into freshly butchered meat.

Modeling Clay

1 cup salt

1/2 cup flour

3/4 cup water

food coloring

Mix first 3 ingredients and cook slowly to a stiff paste.  As it cools it may be colored by working food coloring into the mixture.

Packages

When wrapping a package t send in the mail wet the cord first before wrapping.  As it dries ii will shrink leaving a more tightly wrapped package.

Coffee to Serve 100 people

1 1/2 pounds coffee

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp mustard

5 gallons of boiling water

Silver Cleaner

aluminum foil

1 tsp baking soda

1 quart of water

Cover bottom of pan with aluminum foil.  Add soda and water and heat to boiling.  Immerse silver in solution so that each piece touches the foil.  Tarnish will disappear quickly.  Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

Tar Stains

Put butter or lard on stain.  Leave as long as possible.  Wash as usual.  The tar should now be removed.

You will need the glass from 2 discount store picture frames.  Chose any size desired.

mosaic2
Place one of the glass pane over card stock or paper.  I have used red in this example to better define the size of the glass.

mosaic3
If you are proficient cutting glass than cut glass pieces in shapes  and place on the glass in the desired location.  If you do not cut glass small square pieces of glass can be purchased at craft and discount stores.  You can also purchase  pre-cut glass pieces from stained glass outlets.  Unless you have experience cutting glass I do not recommend that you start without appropriate instruction.  This example shows a cut glass picture.

mosaic5
Once you have laid out your entire image get some glass glue from the discount store and glue each small piece of glass to the glass backing.  The glass glue will dry clear.

mosaic6
Mix tile grout in your desired color according to manufacturer’s instructions.

mosaic7
Apply liberally to the picture covering all crevices.  Grout is corrosive so please be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safety.

mosaic8
With a damp sponge remove the extra grout.  Let the grout dry and then remove the remaining film off of the glass with a damp sponge.

mosaic9
Glue second pane of glass in place and let dry.  There are several ways to finish the edges.  The easiest way is to purchase decorative duct tape and tape the edges in place.  This example shows a decorative green tape that was purchased at a discount store.

mosaic10
Finished pane resting on the table.  The clear colored glass will glow when exposed  to light.
